Kevin Muiderman Dreadnought
Irish guitar star and Peghead Nation instructor John Doyle demonstrates one of his main touring instruments.
John Doyle burst on the scene as a cofounder of Celtic supergroup Solas in the mid-1990s, and his brilliant rhythm work has made him one of the most in-demand guitarists in folk and traditional music. John has used many different guitars over the course of his career, but for the last 15 years or so, he has relied on several instruments built by North Dakota luthier Kevin Muiderman. When John was in the Peghead Nation studio to shoot lessons for his new Irish Guitar course, he had one of his earliest Muiderman guitars with him, built shortly after he met Kevin at the Swannanoa Gathering music camp. Custom built for John’s left-handed playing, the guitar has a dreadnought body with mahogany back and sides and a cedar top. In this video, John discusses the guitar and its setup details, his choice of a heavy .070 low string, his preference for Dunlop Nylon Standard .73MM picks, and more.
