GUITAR COURSES

Irish Guitar with John Doyle

Key of C Chords:  Tunes in the key of C aren’t all that common in Irish traditional music, but “My Maryanne” is a great one.  John shows you how to build all the chords you’ll need  to structure a solid accompaniment pattern with variations.

Contemporary Flatpicking Guitar with Grant Gordy

Introduction to Reharmonization:  Using the old chestnut “Home Sweet Home” in the key of C, Grant explores a variety of strategies for reharmonizing the basic I, IV, and V chords to change the overall feel or “color” of this familiar melody.

Irish Flatpicking Guitar with Flynn Cohen

Sliabh Russell:  Also known as “Russell’s,” “Slieve Russell,” or “Sliabh Rosín,” this popular session tune in the key of A minor is associated with the great uilleann piper Seamus Ennis, who recorded it in a medley with the “Sixpenny Money” jig.

Western Swing Guitar with Matt Munisteri

“San Antonio Rose” Accompaniment:   Bob Wills made this song a western-swing anthem. Matt shows you an arrangement in the key of  A♭ that combines moving chords with walking bass lines, chord-melody segments, and a variety of fills.

MANDOLIN COURSES

Weekly Mandolin Workout with Ethan Setiawan

The Key of C:  This month Ethan takes you on a tour of the key of C. You’ll work on basic scales, extended scale patterns, various chord voicings, and arpeggios for the most common chords in that key, and apply it all to the  fiddle tune “Boston Boy.”

Monroe-Style Mandolin with Mike Compton

Big Sandy River:  This Kenny Baker and Bill Monroe tune is a classic bluegrass instrumental in the key of A. Mike teaches the solo from 1962 Bluegrass Special! Album, which is played entirely in third position with drone strings and arpeggios.

Gypsy Jazz Mandolin Essentials with Aaron Weinstein

Limehouse Blues:  This swing and  jazz standard has been recorded by everyone from Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli to David Grisman to bluegrass greats Reno and Smiley. Aaron teaches it in the string-friendly key of G.

The Advancing Mandolinist with Joe K. Walsh

Rattlesnake:  This slinky David Grisman tune in the key of G minor has a relaxed groove and is typically played at a less-than breakneck-tempo. With an AABA format, it  has a quirky rhythmic shift to waltz time (3/4) in the second half.

Octave Mandolin with Joe K. Walsh

Mount Holly:  This intriguing five-part tune by Peghead instructor Ethan Setiawan is in the key of D.  Joe describes it as a little more elaborate than the tunes you’ve tackled so far in this course, but he breaks it down into easily accessible phrases.

FIDDLE COURSES

Jazz Violin with Aaron Weinstein

I’ve Found a New Baby:  Aaron shows you how to apply some techniques you learned in earlier lessons to craft a solo for this enduring standard in the jazz, swing, and pop repertories. Aaron teaches the song in the key of D minor.

Old-Time Fiddle with Bruce Molsky

Brickyard Joe:  Bruce describes this session favorite as a “notey” tune, and it does clip right along. In the key of G, “Brickyard Joe” is usually played as a two-part tune, and Bruce’s version starts on the high part, although some fiddlers invert the parts.

BANJO COURSES

Clawhammer Banjo with Evie Ladin

Lily of the Valley:  Here’s a great earworm from Kentucky fiddler Luther Strong, as collected by Alice Gerrard and Andy Cahan. Gerrard and Kay Justice recorded it for their Tear Down the Fences album. It’s a simple, two-part tune in the key of D.
