Let Me Rest at the End of My Journey, Part 1

Here’s another great one from Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys’ second gospel album, I'll Meet You in Church Sunday Morning. With a familiar cowboy motif, the lyrics for “Let Me Rest at the End of My Journey” suggest that heaven is waiting at the end of a long cattle drive. Although Monroe himself never played a mandolin solo on this number in the studio recording or onstage, Mike offers his interpretation of what BIg Mon might have played on this bluegrass gospel classic, replete with period-correct stylistic flourishes including typical tremolo sections, triplets, slides, and blues notes. Mike’s solo is in the song’s original key of E. Mike suggests that the secret to playing the transitions between picked single notes and the tremolo sections and double stops is keeping the picking hand very relaxed. In this video, Mike shows you the complete solo.
