Northfield's Derek Smith demonstrated a special Wavelength octave mandolin.

Northfield’s Wavelength is a compact octave mandolin with a short 19 inch scale and an A-style body. Designed for greater playing comfort and easier portability than a full-size octave mandolin, the Wavelength has become a popular offering in Northfield’s catalog. In this video, Northfield’s Derek Smith demonstrates a very special recent Wavelength build that uses wood from a superb log of sugar maple that the company recently acquired and which is used on select instruments. Derek plays the instrument, and also discusses its construction particulars.
