GUITAR COURSES

Contemporary Flatpicking Guitar with Grant Gordy

Spread Dominant Chords:  Grant shows you how to take inversions of a C chord and “spread” the voicing by moving the middle voice to a higher octave and then build and apply dominant chords based on that new voicing.

Irish Flatpicking Guitar with Flynn Cohen

The Silver Slipper:  Flynn learned this quirky hop jig from famed Donegal fiddler John Doherty. A hop jig is in 9/8 time and is similar to a slip jig, but with a different rhythmic emphasis. It’s in the key of D, and you’ll learn it in C position with a capo.

Western Swing Guitar with Matt Munisteri

Corrine Corrina:  This 12-bar blues is a standard in many idioms, including western swing, blues, rock ‘n’ roll, Cajun, and jazz. Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys had a hit with it in the early ‘40s. Matt’s setting is in the key of Bb.

MANDOLIN COURSES

Beginning Mandolin with Sharon Gilchrist

Following Guitar Players: Sharon introduces the essential skill of following a guitar player’s left hand to learn the chords of unfamiliar songs. She shows you how to listen and look for  I-IV-V progressions in a variety of keys and capo positions.

Weekly Mandolin Workout with Ethan Setiawan

Chopping:  Bill Monroe’s driving rhythm mandolin style is commonly known as “chopping.” Ethan starts with the mechanics of basic off-beat chopping and then explores more elaborate techniques that will help make you a rhythm machine.

Monroe-Style Mandolin with Mike Compton

We’ll Understand It Better By and By:  Here’s another A-major gospel number from Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys. Monroe’s solo adheres closely to the  vocal melody with only a brief departure at the top of the second half.

Gypsy Jazz Mandolin Essentials with Aaron Weinstein

My Blue Heaven: Tin Pan Alley songsmith Walter Donaldson penned “My Blue Heaven” in 1927, and it’s been a favorite ever since. Aaron teaches the AABA-format tune in the key of Eb, and you’ll learn a solo that uses familiar fingering.

The Advancing Mandolinist with Joe K. Walsh

Ora Lee:  This great old dance tune in the key of G has its roots in the 19th century hit “Aura Lea.” Joe’s version draws on a Darol Anger arrangement that drapes the simple tune in rich layers of harmonies, shifting lead voices, and substitute chords.

Bluegrass Mandolin Fingerboard Method with Sharon Gilchrist

“John Henry” in Open Position:  Sharon continues her exploration of “John Henry” this month with a version on the low strings in first position. Then she shows you how to connect it with the closed version you learned last month.

Octave Mandolin with Joe K. Walsh

Shaker March:  Joe learned this lovely tune in the key of C from songwriter-mandolinist Chris Moore.  Joe teaches the tune and a chord progression, and demonstrates it on both octave and standard mandolins.

FIDDLE COURSES

Jazz Violin with Aaron Weinstein

I Can’t Give You Anything But Love:  Aaron doesn’t introduce any new tools in  this lesson. Instead, you’ll make use of all the improvisational devices you’ve already learned to play a solo on  “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love (Baby).”

Folk and Bluegrass Songs with Lauren Rioux

Miss McLeod’s Reel:  Lauren concludes her lesson on this classic fiddle tune by showing you how to play it in the keys of D, Eb, E, F, and G. In most keys, you will learn to adapt the closed hand shapes you learned in earlier lessons.

Old-Time Fiddle with Bruce Molsky

Eck Robertson’s “Cotton-Eyed Joe”:  Bruce teaches a unique version of the tune by Texas fiddler Eck Robertson. You’ll learn it in the key of A in the unusual “cross” tuning of EEAE, which allows for some interesting double stops and drones.

BANJO COURSES

Clawhammer Banjo with Evie Ladin

Forky Deer:  Evie shows you a version of this common session tune that has a lot of drop-thumb action in the first part. Evie’s setting is in the key of D, and you’ll play it with a capo on the second fret.
