GUITAR COURSES
Contemporary Flatpicking Guitar with Grant Gordy
Major Scale Exercises in B♭: Grant’s lesson this month focuses on major-scale exercises in the key of B♭. He shows you a variety of ways to extend your work with the basic major scale by changing intervals and building compound-interval scales.
Irish Flatpicking Guitar with Flynn Cohen
Up in the Air: Fiddler Kevin Burke and guitarist Mícheál Ó Domhnaill composed “Up in the Air” for their Portland album, and it has since become a session favorite. The tune is in the key of B minor, with the second part starting in the relative major.
Western Swing Guitar with Matt Munisteri
Bubbles in My Beer: This quintessential drowning-my-sorrows-in-booze song was a standard for Bob Wills and dozens of other artists. Matt teaches the song in the original key of C, and he’ll show you the melody, chords, and some harmony lines.
MANDOLIN COURSES
Weekly Mandolin Workout with Ethan Setiawan
Playing Solo Mandolin Slowly: Ethan shows you a variety of techniques for building integrated patterns to accompany slow melodies, and how to apply them in a solo arrangement of “Midnight on the Water,” a haunting waltz in the key of D.
Monroe-Style Mandolin with Mike Compton
The Glory Land Way: This month’s featured solo is a joyful rendition of a gospel favorite in C major. Monroe’s playful solo hews closely to the melody, but incorporates a ragtime E-flat to E-natural phrase that echoes the vocal bends.
Gypsy Jazz Mandolin Essentials with Aaron Weinstein
I’ll See You in My Dreams: This Isham Jones standard has been recorded by the likes of Louis Armstrong, Merle Travis, and Django Reinhardt. Aaron teaches the song in the key of F, a common choice for both string and horn players.
The Advancing Mandolinist with Joe K. Walsh
Big Hill: This month, Joe teaches an original tune by fellow Peghead Nation instructor Ethan Setiawan. The two-part melody is based on a pentatonic scale, and works well as both a stand-alone mandolin tune or as a launch pad for jamming.
Octave Mandolin with Joe K. Walsh
On the Danforth: This sweet tune from Keith Murphy is currently popular in various traditional music scenes. Joe taught this tune in his Advancing Mandolinist course last month and is now bringing it to the octave mandolin. Joe teaches the tune in the original key of A.
FIDDLE COURSES
Jazz Violin with Aaron Weinstein
Exactly Like You: This jazz standard was recorded by Louis Armstrong, Stéphane Grappelli, Danish jazz violinist Svend Asmussen, and many others. It’s in the key of C and has a distinctive melody, featuring a phrase of descending parallel fourths.
Old-Time Fiddle with Bruce Molsky
Great Big Taters in Sandy Land: This driving hoedown is a good one to play for square dances. Bruce got this particular setting from Missouri fiddler Earl Collins. It’s in the key of A with the fiddle in “sawmill” tuning—AEAE.
BANJO COURSES
Clawhammer Banjo with Evie Ladin
Chicken and Dumplings: Composed by the late North Carolina fiddler Trevor Stuart, “Chicken and Dumplings” is a sweet and relatively simple tune in the key of G. Evie notes that it’s a good one to learn to play up the neck in a higher octave.
PLAY-ALONG RHYTHM TRACKS – Available to all subscribers. Guitar accompaniment video, downloadable audio, and chord charts for popular bluegrass, old-time, and roots tunes and songs.
