Joe K. Walsh, John Mailander, Todd Phillips, Paul Kowert: “Egypt”

An all-star band plays an iconic composition at Great Lakes Music Camp.

June 30, 2023

This is an epic performance from the Great Lakes Music Camp instructor concert last year, with Peghead Nation instructor Joe K. Walsh on mandolin, Todd Phillips and Paul Kowert on bass, and John Mailander on fiddle, playing “Egypt,” written by Montreux. That band was Darol Anger, Mike Marshall, Barbara Higbie, and Michael Manring. Todd Phillips recorded “Egypt” with Montreux 38 years ago, and reprises it here with another great band.

Great Lakes Music Camp is coming up again October 5 -8, 2023, on the shores of Lake Michigan, and will include Peghead Nation instructors Emerald Rae, Bill Evans, Evie Ladin, Zoe Guigueno, Stash Wyslouch, and John Reischman, among other talented teachers!

And be sure to check out Joe‘s new course, Swing and Jazz Mandolin, available now for subscription! In this course, you’ll earn to play swing and jazz melodies and classic solos from jazz legends like Lester Young, Miles Davis, and Django Reinhardt, as well as swing mandolinists like Tiny Moore and Jethro Burns. For each song, you’ll learn the melody and a solo, along with tips on technique, phrasing, and improvisation. Joe will be adding new material to this course each month. Check out his course introduction video on the main Swing and Jazz Mandolin page.
