Mr Sun, the progressive acoustic string band that features Peghead Nation mandolin instructor Joe K. Walsh with fiddle legend Darol Anger, guitar master Grant Gordy, and jazz/roots bassist Aidan O’Donnell, have just released their new album, Extrovert. The release features Mr Sun’s virtuosic interplay on inventive original compositions and refreshing renditions of other tunes and songs.
One of the tunes on Extrovert is Mr Sun’s beautiful take on The Beatles’ “Blackbird.” We caught up with the band for a few exclusive performances while they were playing multiple sets and teaching workshops at the Wintergrass Festival in February 2022, and they treated us to this intimate performance of “Blackbird.” They walk on with style, too!
In a brand new lesson in Joe’s Advancing Mandolinist course, he shows you how to approach playing the song on the mandolin, including learning the melody, voicing the chords, and improvising over the chord changes. Joe also teaches 95 (and counting) other lessons in this course, so expand your mandolin repertoire by joining Joe’s course. Use promo code JoeLand at checkout and get your first month free!
Check out Extrovert on Compass Records, available in most places you get your music!
Take a look at another Peghead Nation exclusive video from this session, with Mr Sun playing the old-time favorite “Farewell Trion.”
