In this video, Bill shows you how to add the forward-reverse roll to the melody of “Worried Man Blues,” which you learned to play in an earlier lesson. You’ll be relieved to know that there isn’t a hard-and-fast rule about getting every single melody note into your solo. Your ear will fill in some of the missing notes, and the rolls will maintain the momentum of your solo.

| Two More Essential Banjo Rolls, Part 3: The “Foggy Mountain Breakdown” Roll |
Bill introduces the “Foggy Mountain Breakdown” roll and a few variations in this video. The finger order of this roll is a little different in that it starts on the index finger: index, middle, thumb, middle, thumb, index, middle, thumb (i m t m t i m t). An essential seven-note variation drops the first strike by the middle finger and lets the initial index finger note ring for a full quarter note. As Bill mentions, this adds a lot of punch and drive to the roll.
