This month, Grant shows you some ways to master the E-major scale in various positions on the guitar fingerboard. Grant notes that scale exercises typically start with the lowest available note in open position and then proceed upwards note-by-note an octave or two, followed by the same pattern in reverse. You’ll start the same way in this lesson, beginning with the open sixth string and working your way up in first position, but then you’ll learn to start the patterns on different degrees of the E-major scale in different positions on the fingerboard. Next, you’ll you’ll learn to build scale patterns on the third and fifth notes of the E-major triad (G # and B) in higher positions. He finishes the lesson with a scale starting with the middle finger on the E at the 12th fret of the sixth string and moving up in that position to the high F# on the first string at the 14th fret. He provides some prescriptive fingerings for these patterns, but suggests that once you’ve mastered those, finding alternative fingerings is a good idea. In this video, Grant shows you the basic E-major scale in first position.
