Basic Clawhammer Technique, Part 2: Single Strings
After you learn the basic clawhammer motion you can start to focus your downstrokes on single strings using one finger. Evie explains why she prefers using her index finger to strike single strings and shows you how to hit just one string at a time with your downstrokes and alternate it with your thumb stroke. You’ll start by playing the first string, then the second, third, and fourth strings. You’ll also learn to combine single-string downstrokes with strums, so your bum-ditty becomes “string, strum, thumb,” and you’ll learn some exercises that put the “bum” on different strings. Evie plays all these examples at a relaxed tempo so you can play along with her, and gives you advice on practicing by yourself.
