Make Me a Pallet on Your Floor

In this lesson you’ll learn a fingerstyle arrangement of the folk-blues classic “Make Me a Pallet on Your Floor” inspired by the playing of Mississippi John Hurt. Orville plays the song through and then explains the guitar part phrase by phrase. He also explains how you can alter the lengths of some of the chords, depending on how you hear the song, something that John Hurt and other great blues singers and guitarists did all the time.

“Make Me a Pallet” with Bottleneck Slide, Part 1

In the last lesson you learned to play a lead solo on “Make Me a Pallet on Your Floor.” In this lesson you’ll learn to play a solo on the same song using a bottleneck slide in standard tuning. Orville starts by playing the melody in two positions and improvising a solo. Then he breaks each part down, showing you how he uses pick blocking and other techniques to create a clean melodic line with the slide. You’ll learn the melody in both octaves in this video, with tips on playing some flourishes with the slide.
