Lead Guitar Basics, Part 3: Picking Techniques
You can use many different picking approaches when you’re play blues solos: a flatpick, bare fingers, fingerpicks, whatever it takes to get the sound you want. In this lesson Orville demonstrates a few handy techniques, including pick blocking, a great technique to use when you’re picking the notes with your fingers, and “raking” the strings (playing a quick flurry of notes across the strings) with the flatpick. While some kinds of music work best with strict alternating down-up picking, using a lot of downstrokes with the pick can give you a great sound for the blues.
