Tim Sparks, Part 1: Tim Plays “Wayfaring Stranger”
Tim Sparks is one of the most creative forces in contemporary fingerstyle guitar. Having won the 1993 fingerstyle guitar competition at the Walnut Valley Fingerstyle Guitar championship in Winfield, Kansas, he burst onto the international scene the same year by releasing his album, The Nutcracker Suite, which included Tim’s take on the Tchaikovsky classic as well as arrangements of traditional pieces from the Balkan region. His follow-up release, Balkan Dream Suite, includes some brilliantly interpreted odd-metered folk tunes as well as some of Tim’s compositions. In the two decades since, his recordings have included original material, traditional Jewish music, and a return to his North Carolina roots playing country-blues guitar. Tim’s latest album is 2014’s Chasin’ the Boogie, which includes originals and arrangements of American traditional and pop songs. His jazz-style reharmonization of “Wayfaring Stranger” is an engaging and advanced arrangement of the familiar tune, and he performs it here. timsparks.com
