Mike Compton’s Monroe-Style Mandolin Course Is Live!

Peghead Nation adds to its popular mandolin lineup with the great Mike Compton's Monroe-Style Mandolin course.

November 24, 2015

The one-and-only Mike Compton has joined Peghead Nation’s mandolin staff with a brand new video course called Monroe-Style Mandolin.

As Mike explains in the Course introduction video above, you’ll learn traditional bluegrass-style mandolin as exemplified by the father of bluegrass, Bill Monroe, with original solos and tips on reproducing Monroe’s iconic sound, rhythm, and feel. Mike carefully breaks down classic Monroe tunes and includes his exact transcriptions in notation and tablature for each song he teaches. Throughout the course, Mike uses the tunes to teach Monroe’s approach to double-stops, tremolo, slides, and more. Plus, you’ll hear Mike talk about Monroe’s deep influence, both on him personally and on legions of mandolinists and bluegrass fans. In short, Monroe-Style Mandolin gives students the most authentic instruction available in the traditional bluegrass style.

Mike Compton is a Grammy-winning recording artist and performer and the New York Times calls him “a new bluegrass instrumental hero.” He’s the founder of the popular Monroe Mandolin Camp, which takes place in Tennessee each September, and is a passionate teacher and advocate for the mandolin. Mike is a founding member of the Nashville Bluegrass Band, and he worked with T-Bone Burnett on the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack and subsequent tours as a member of the Soggy Bottom Boys. In performance, Mike takes the stage solo and with many ensembles including his duo with Joe Newberry, Jumpsteady Boys (with fellow Peghead Nation instructor Bruce Molsky), Helen Highwater String Band, and many more. He can channel Monroe-style playing better than anyone and we’re thrilled to have him teaching on Peghead Nation.

Mike’s course joins Peghead Nation’s popular mandolin lineup, which includes Beginning Mandolin with Sharon Gilchrist, and The Advancing Mandolinist with Joe Walsh.
