Watch our Clawhammer Banjo instructor's workshop "Hearing and Playing Nuanced Variations."
Our Clawhammer Banjo instructor Evie Ladin recently hosted a live Zoom workshop called “Hearing and Playing Nuanced Variations.” In this workshop, Evie focused on developing ear training skills to recognize and play different variations of the same traditional tune, “Going Across the Sea,” and plays recorded versions from different artists including Bill Monroe, The Onlies, Corn Potato String Band, Pharis and Jason Romero, and others. You can check out her Spotify playlist of those versions here. She demonstrates how the various artists interpret the same song differently in the chord progression and melody variations, with a goal of being able to listen in real time to more easily play with others in jams, and move beyond reliance on tablature. Evie also talks about the importance of following other instruments (especially fiddle), and techniques for gradually building speed and complexity in playing traditional tunes.
Enjoy this recording of the workshop!
We suggested a $30 donation for workshop attendees and have a donation jar below if you’d like to donate what you can now!
And sign up for Evie’s Clawhammer Banjo course on Peghead Nation to keep learning after the workshop!
