Our Clawhammer Banjo instructor Evie Ladin recently hosted a live Zoom workshop called “Beyond the Bum Ditty, Part 2: Practicing Syncopations.” You can watch the video from this workshop above.

This workshop built upon concepts that Evie covered in “Beyond the Bum Ditty: Practicing Syncopations and Their Application in Tunes,” which you can also watch on Peghead Nation by clicking here! Once you’ve mastered the basic right-hand “bum-ditty” motion of clawhammer banjo, there are myriad ways to open up your rhythmic playing to get more in sync with the more fluid rhythms of the fiddle bow: drop thumb, i-skip, triplets, and more. Evie goes through a number of these skills, and practices them in specific, common old-time tunes to increase fluidity without sacrificing steady rhythm.

We suggested a $25 donation for workshop attendees and we had a donation jar available at the event (and below if you’d like to donate now), but we want you to be able to enjoy the workshop regardless of your financial circumstances, so please feel free to donate what you’re able to.

And sign up for Evie’s Clawhammer Banjo course on Peghead Nation to keep learning after the workshop!
