Mike Compton: “The Old Mountaineer”

Our new Monroe-Style Mandolin instructor plays a classic Bill Monroe tune and gives a preview of the traditional bluegrass mandolin style he’ll be teaching on Peghead Nation.

Mike Compton’s Monroe-Style Mandolin course is now live on Peghead Nation, and here’s Mike playing the Bill Monroe instrumental, “The Old Mountaineer.” The tune highlights many of the Monroe-influenced bluegrass mandolin techniques that Mike focuses on in his course—double stops, slides, and incorporating melody playing into common chord shapes. You can find a recording of the tune on the Mike Compton and David Long album Stomp.

To learn traditional bluegrass mandolin with Mike, join his Monroe-Style Mandolin course on Peghead Nation.
