This month Ethan takes you on a tour of the key of C. You’ll work on basic scales, extended scale patterns, various chord voicings, and arpeggios for the most common chords in that key. To pull it all together, Ethan shows you “Boston Boy,” a popular bluegrass and old-time tune in C. In this week’s video, Ethan starts off by showing you a basic C scale and then how to add all the other notes in the scale in first position. He follows up with an extended pentatonic (five-note) scale in first position, which provides a handy basis for improvising.
