John adds a drone string to much of the melody of the B part of “Little Liza Jane,” and the first phrase begins with a clawhammer-style rhythm. John walks you through it phrase by phrase and then shows you how to find the melody of the A part an octave up the neck.

“The Storms Are on the Ocean” is a beautiful song in 3/4 time that originally comes from the Carter Family. You’ll learn to embellish the basic melody with double-stops, slides, and hammer-ons. John shows you the melody in the key of G, but since much of the arrangement is played with double-stops in closed positions, that makes it easy to transpose to other keys, if you or someone else wants to sing it in another key.
