I’ve Found a New Baby, Part 1: Solo

Written by Spencer Williams and Jack Palmer in 1924, “I’ve Found a New Baby” is one of the most popular standards in New Orleans jazz, swing, and Gypsy jazz, with nearly 500 recorded versions. Charlie Christian’s solo on the song with the Benny Goodman band is considered one of his finest, and for a red-hot jazz violin take, check out Stéphane Grappelli with Django Reinhardt. Aaron teaches the song in the key of D minor. In this lesson, he shows you how to take some of the techniques you learned in earlier lessons to craft a solo for the enduring jazz favorite. As he walks you through the solo phrase-by-phrase, he explains which improvisational device he’s applying.
