This punchy reel is associated with the great tenor banjo and mandolin player Barney McKenna, who often performed it with the Dubliners back in the 1960s. It’s a D Mixolydian tune with C natural notes that require either a stretch or a slight shift from first position to play. Flynn shows you both options so you can tailor your approach to your own strengths. Note that both the A and B parts end on a IV (G) chord rather than resolving to the tonic, a harmonic quirk that’s not uncommon in traditional Irish music.
