Flynn learned this quirky hop jig from famed Donegal fiddler John Doherty’s Floating Bow album. A hop jig is in 9/8 time and is similar to a slip jig, but with a different rhythmic emphasis. This particular tune has some additional rhythmic eccentricities in the first bars of the A part that give it a 6/8 feel. Flynn will show you how to navigate the bumps in the groove and get you going on this session favorite. The tune is commonly played in the key of D, but Doherty often tuned his fiddle down a step so that it sounds like it’s in the key of C, and Flynn teaches it out of C position on the guitar. To play it in a session, put a capo on the second fret. In this video, Flynn shows you the A part of “The Silver Slipper.”
