Evie Ladin

Evie Ladin

Evie Ladin’s polyrhythmic clawhammer banjo style, resonant voice, and percussive dance have been heard from A Prairie Home Companion to Celtic Connections, Lincoln Center to Hardly Strictly Bluegrass. Following a decade and three albums with the Stairwell Sisters, Evie has released four CDs that feature her banjo playing and songwriting: Float Downstream, Evie Ladin Band, Jump the Fire, and Caught on a Wire, as well as a traditional banjo and fiddle duet album with some of her favorite fiddlers: Riding the Rooster. She is also a crackerjack percussive dancer and incorporates that rhythmic work into her playing and singing. A popular instructor at many music camps, as well as Berkeley, California’s Freight and Salvage when she is home, Evie tours frequently with her partner Keith Terry and the Evie Ladin Band.

In this four-session live workshop series, Evie Ladin explores G tuning as a way to move your clawhammer banjo playing beyond familiar positions, patterns, and rote versions of tunes, to a more fluid, intuitive way of playing. She’ll guide you through learning movable chord shapes and finger patterns to give you practical ways to navigate and connect the banjo neck, with lots of practice time and tips. You’ll work on transitioning smoothly between areas of the neck, recognizing useful note relationships and variations, finding any chord you might want, and using just what you need to move quickly for easier flow. You’ll focus on a newfound knowledge of the fretboard to react and play based on what’s going on around you. The goal is to feel more relaxed, confident, and free while playing clawhammer banjo with other musicians. This workshop is ideal for players with a basic foundation in clawhammer banjo who are ready to play with greater confidence, freedom, and musical flexibility.
