Session 3 (April 29): “Fine Times at Our House” and “Chinquapin Hunting” |
Session 3: “Fine Times at Our House” and “Chinquapin Hunting,” Part 1 |
In this session, you’ll learn two tunes in the key of A, both played without a capo: John Summers’s “Fine Times at Our House” and Norman Edmonds’s “Chinquapin Hunting,” both of which sound great played in open position, although they do provide some fingering challenges. Scott’s version of “Fine Times at Our House” is faithful to Summers’s version but his “Chinquapin Hunting” has been adapted more to the guitar in open position.
Edden Hammons’s version of “Fine Times at Our House” is the usual source for contemporary old-time fiddlers, but Indiana fiddler John Summers version is also quite interesting and his B part is very different from Hammons’s. Norman Edmonds’s “Chinquapin Hunting” is completely different from the D tune with the same that has become popular in bluegrass circles. Bruce Molsky’s version is many people’s source for the key-of-A “Chinquapin Hunting” these days.
