In this lesson, Sharon introduces the essential skill of following a guitar player’s left hand on songs where you might not already be familiar with the chord progressions. She begins by refreshing your memory on finding the basic I, IV, and V chords in the keys of A, G, C, D, using an array of “chop” (aka “Monroe”) chords, barre chords, and open forms. Then she walks you through a variety of songs in different keys, with Paul Kotapish strumming the chord changes on guitar to show you how you can watch the guitar player’s fretting hand to glean the chord progression by sight as well as by ear. In this video, Sharon reviews the basic chords on the mandolin.
