Home Sweet Home

In Part 2 of the lesson on crosspicking, you'll learn the first part of Scott's arrangement of "Home Sweet Home," which mostly uses the traditional 3-3-2 roll. Since crosspicking is usually used to play song melodies, it's a good idea to learn the melody of a song before tackling a crosspicking arrangement, so Scott starts by making sure you know the melody to "Home Sweet Home" and then takes the arrangement apart phrase by phrase (or roll by roll).

The B part of “New Camptown Races” begins on a G minor for four bars. Scott’s version of the melody was influenced by the way David Grisman played it on the Muleskinner recording in 1973. Then the B part goes to two bars of C7 and two bars of F before it returns to Bb and a repeat of the last eight bars of the A part to finish the tune. Scott’s last A is a variation of what you learned in the first part, moving up to the treble strings and ending with a lick that is a lot like one of Tony Rice’s blues licks. Scott ends by showing you how to play bluegrass-sounding chords in Bb without a capo
