Ellis Mandolins are built by master luthier Tom Ellis and a small team of craftspeople in Austin, Texas, where Tom and the team also run Precision Pearl, which manufactures inlay for many of the leading guitar and instrument manufacturers in the world, and Pava Mandolins.
Over six days in December 2019, photographer Travis Duncan shot footage of Ellis Mandolins’ master luthier Josh Lutrell finishing a beautiful Tom Ellis Custom A-Syle mandolin with an Adirondack spruce top and premium sugar maple on the back and sides. Travis shot with the latest release of the RED Gemini 5K camera, which resulted in some stunning footage of the highly detailed work that Josh was doing on this special instrument. He then created this artful short film that captures the precision craft, beautiful materials, and talented people that go into the making of a fine custom instrument.
