About Dede Wyland

Dede Wyland

Milwaukee-born singer and guitarist Dede Wyland’s 1980–1987 work with Tony Trischka and Skyline brought her international acclaim and made her a role model for a generation of younger female musicians. Dede is an eleven-time winner of the Washington Area Music Association’s Bluegrass Singer of the Year award, and her career is the subject of a chapter in Murphy Henry’s 2013 book Pretty Good for a Girl:Women in Bluegrass.

Since moving to the Washington/Baltimore area in 1990, Dede has established herself as a sought-after vocal coach. Aside from her private students she also teaches workshops and music camps around the country and abroad. An article on Dede’s teaching career was featured in the March 2023 issue of Bluegrass Unlimited.

Dede was recently awarded a “Master Artist, Bluegrass and Country Vocals” certificate by the Maryland Council of the Arts for her participation in their grant program to sustain the living cultural traditions in Maryland. Throughout her career, Dede has recorded with numerous musical groups and artists and her two solo recordings, Urge for Going and Keep the Light On, can be found on the Patuxent Music label.
