Teja Gerken and Doug Young, “Travis”
Peghead Nation instructor Doug Young and co-founder Teja Gerken play a guitar duet of the Béla Fleck tune.
Peghead Nation co-founder Teja Gerken and instructor Doug Young frequently perform as a guitar duo, and they’ve released two albums together, DUETS and The Water is Wide. Teja first came across banjo master Béla Fleck’s tune “Travis” through bassist Edgar Meyer’s album Uncommon Ritual, which also features Béla and Mike Marshall. Béla wrote “Travis” on guitar and played it on a National resonator on the recording.
In Teja and Doug’s version, which is included on DUETS, Doug plays a variation of Béla’s original fingerstyle part, in DADGAD tuning, with a capo at the 5th fret, while Teja’s part is inspired by Mike Marshall’s mandocello part on Uncommon Ritual. Playing in CGDGCD tuning, he alternates between flatpicked and fingerstyle parts. In this video, Teja plays his Lowden O10, while Doug plays a guitar built by Kent Hamblin.
