This beautifully crooked tune in the key of D comes from New York multi-instrumentalist, folklorist, and vintage-record collector Pat Conte. Conte says he made it up on the spot while recording Songs that Scare Me (at 29:00), a lo-fi, cassette-only album from the early 1980s on which he overdubbed fiddles, mandolin, banjo, and guitar. Years later, Dave Marshall, Andrea Cooper, and Joel Bernstein recorded a lovely version with fiddle, banjo, and harmonica on their Pleasant Hill CD. Evie teaches two settings of this gem—one with all the notes and ornaments, and then a more streamlined version. She teaches it in double-D tuning with a capo on the second fret. In this video, Evie teaches you the complete melody.
